Laser Deburring: Enhancing Component Quality

Burrs on cut and punched edges of sheet metal increase the risk of injury and can often damage cables and scratch surfaces. For this reason alone, it makes sense to deburr such edges. If this is done by laser, not only can edges be selectively reinforced, but the fatigue strength of the components can be increased and the tendency to forming cracks reduced. 

The Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT has developed a laser deburring process that significantly improves the quality of metal components. Unlike mechanical methods, the laser melts the edges, producing smooth and reinforced edges, which are crucial for high-stress parts. This method avoids the generation of grinding dust and can be seamlessly integrated into existing manufacturing processes. It's particularly beneficial for complex geometries, offering high precision and repeatability, making it ideal for industries like automotive and aerospace.

Industrial Integration and Applications

Laser deburring is highly adaptable, efficient, and clean, eliminating the need for additional post-processing. The laser parameters can be customized for optimal surface quality, meeting the stringent requirements of industries that demand superior material strength and surface characteristics.

Further Developments and Future Prospects

In addition to laser deburring, Fraunhofer ILT is advancing laser polishing technologies, which complement the deburring process. These innovations will be showcased at EuroBLECH 2024, promoting the broader adoption of these technologies in industrial applications.
