A Japanese Company with Ultra Precise Polishing Technology

TDC deals directly with 100 companies in 18 countries overseas, and we receive many orders from research institutions such as universities.

TDC has polished the mirrors of the radio telescope "BICEP3" installed in the Antarctic to study gravitational waves immediately after the birth of the universe. TDC was also responsible for mirror-finishing the sample collection container for Hayabusa2, which succeeded in collecting rocks from the inside of an asteroid for the first time in the world in July 2019. TDC has its unique polishing technology that allows it to polish any material with the precision of dimensional accuracy of ±100 nanometers (nm) and surface roughness Ra of 1 nm. 1 nm is about the size of three water molecules. “No other company can achieve this level of precision with a variety of materials,” says President Akabane.

Producing equipment and jigs in-house and promoting the new technology we have developed for the world

How was it possible to improve the technology to that extent? Polishing is done using an abrasive while rotating a record player-like device called a lapping machine. Normally, many polishing manufacturers specialize in materials, with lens manufacturers working on glass and mold manufacturers working on metals, but TDC, as a latecomer, has actively accepted processing that other companies cannot do. Since this cannot be achieved with commercially available equipment, TDC has modified or made its own equipment and developed handmade jigs (instruments used to direct and guide the working positions of parts and tools during processing and assembly). The company has used a combination of various abrasive materials, and through repeated trial and error, adjusted the pressure and rotation speed of the lapping machine to meet customer demands.

Desire for overseas expansion

We have worked with many companies from overseas. It makes us feel very happy and find it rewarding to be able to help customers in faraway countries through precision manufacturing. This also motivates our engineers to develop more precise technology. We have staff who are fluent in English, so through discussion, we can propose possible solutions to your problems.
