Innovative kits for augmented reality applications

The Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology FEP is pleased to present the latest generation of ultra-low power OLED microdisplays. These microdisplays score thanks to their power efficient concept. Contrary to the current trend of increasing resolutions and higher framerates, the FEP scientists stuck to their low-power approach and found the right overall concept.

The small size of the OLED microdisplay is perfect for miniaturized and lightweight systems that are portable and easy to integrate into clothing, helmets, and glasses. The microdisplays are thus used, for example, in industry or disaster management, where long running times without interruption are indispensable for charging times.

The display, however, depends on the information to be displayed, which is sent by a data source. In the event of a major fire with a large number of emergency personnel, for example, the control center send precise and easy-to-understand instructions quickly to the firefighters on site via helmet integrated displays.

A display alone does not make an AR app! The IC and System Designers have now developed the electronics and the display to bring them simply and fast into real applications. The communication by the display with other interfaces and systems is the key to applications.

The FEP offers a complete system concept for controlling the microdisplays through a universal Bluetooth connection. This enables direct, wireless communication via various input devices such as smartphones or laptops.
