Functionally compatible construction methods with thermoplastic foams - Under this heading, the newly founded network TSchaum + Funktion has been operating under the auspices of the Plastics Center in Leipzig (KUZ) since October 2017.

Lightweight construction in plastics technology requires extensive application of design, process and material know-how. Accordingly, the circle of members depicts the entire value chain of industrial applications in order to generate high synergy effects through interdisciplinary cooperation. The expected increase in competence could promote the development of new products and processes, drive forward the development of new, sustainable markets and increase the competitiveness of SMEs. An important basis for this is the experience of KUZ in thermoplastic foam injection molding and hybrid lightweight construction. There are numerous competences for selecting, manufacturing and processing materials in a tailor-made way. The following topics are among others content of the network’s work: Improving the quality of thermoplastic foams, reducing the density, functional integration, influence of various additives and foaming of special polymers.

The "Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM)" is an initiative for the promotion of small and medium-sized enterprises of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. ZIM cooperation networks provide a platform for SME to bundle competences from various industries. The collaboration facilitates the implementation of the latest developments in science and technology into marketable products. The KUZ as a network management facility supports SMEs in the application phase and in the further course of the R&D projects. Non-SMEs can also get involved as associate members and participate in the exchange. Further interested parties and contributors are cordially invited.
